Day of the Breakthrough of the Leningrad Blockade

20 january 2025

One of the most important dates of the Great Patriotic War – the Day of the Breakthrough of the Siege of Leningrad – is celebrated in the city on the Neva on January 18.

Shlisselburg and the southern coast of Lake Ladoga were freed during Operation Iskra. As a result of fierce fighting, the troops of the Leningrad and Volkhov fronts managed to break the blockade ring around the city and restore land communication with the country.

The breakthrough of the blockade became a turning point in the battle for the city on the Neva, instilled confidence in the imminent victory over the enemy, strengthened the forces of the defenders and residents of the besieged city and turned the tide of the battle for Leningrad. The threat of its capture by the nazis was eliminated, and the initiative in the fighting completely passed to the Soviet troops.

The enemy continued fierce bombing and shelling, but in just 17 days a 33-kilometer railway was laid along the southern shore of Lake Ladoga, and already in February, food supply standards rose to the level of other cities in the USSR, which saved tens of thousands of Leningraders.

The trials that befell the Leningraders occupy a special page in the history of our Motherland – our city was surrounded by the enemy for 900 days, and the feat of the Leningraders became a symbol of perseverance, bravery and courage.

Low bow and special gratitude to our veterans!

Health, peace, goodness and prosperity to all of us!
